To make my point clear (especially to Garth ):

Absolutely no one (no one!) said that stretching and/or breathwork are not necessary. They are very (!!) important aspects of a fully developed human being/warrior (as is food).

Nevertheless my statement was (and still is!) that during regular class there is no time for stretching.

This does by no means mean that teachers shouldn't learn it to their students. Every teacher should (IMO has to) teach traditional and modern stretching as well as breathing (and food) considerations to students.

IMO during the first or second test a beginning student takes, a teacher should check whether the student knows how to stretch or not.

After that it is every teachers duty to make sure stretching (endurance, strength) training is done outside regular class. It's easy to tell whether a student stretches or not. Just watch his Taihenjutsu! (It's the same principle as weapon training and Taijutsu.)

By the way: TCJRNM doesn't say anything about stretching or breath work. In Hatsumi-sensei's book Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu (your abbreviation: TGRNPTJ [hmmpff]) the part which is related to this thread is not (as you stated) Bujin shoku to seikatsu. It's the part about Junan undo to Kokyuho which corresponds to this thread.

I agree with you that it's not good for your health if you just train twice a week in the dojo and you're not doing stretching (endurance, strength) training outside regular class.

However if students and teachers alike stretch outside the dojo and train twice a week without stretching the body will not take harm.

I hope my point is clearer now.

We fight as we train.

IMO stretching as well as strength and endurance training are very important.

But during training we should train our martial techniques and spirit only. There is no time to "waste" with stretching during class.

However IMO students and teacher(s) alike should take 5 - 10 Minutes before class to warm up if needed. (Every human body is different.)

The main stretching, strength and endurance training should be done outside the dojo. This can be done alone or even better with friends not from the dojo (it's good to train with other people too).

Finally in the dojo general fitness is brought to life through the Budo Taijutsu program.
