For those planning to come to Daikomyosai for training this year, please note that Soke has said he won't be training for the month following Daikomyosai. That is, he won't be teaching between the end of Daikomyosai and the beginning of the 2011 training year.
Cheers, Shawn

Mark & Ed,
Please take this as a warning for both of you guys to chill out and not make it personal. Once personal insults start happening, that's when I look at deleting posts, etc. Mark, you were recently involved in another thread that got pretty nasty in which I had to go in and delete about 20 posts or so. The other party had access revoked. Please keep this in mind. Both of you, please don't instigate each other. Keep it civil and refrain ("nin") from making it personal. If you feel your temperature going up, walk away from the keyboard and take a break from Kutaki for a couple of days. Thanks, Shawn

No, of course not. It is a completely separate thing, not a Bujinkan event. Shawn

Scott Sonnon is based in the Pacific Northwest and is on Facebook. Both he and Rob are very approachable and can both tell you about their interactions and interpretations of this type of movement exercise.
The only thing I have really seen of Hatsumi Sensei's physical exercise / junan taiso / stretching, etc. is on the old "Ninja Art of Masaaki Hatsumi" videos (2-part series). The videos were made a long time ago and ideas about healthy ways to stretch and gain flexibility have evolved a lot since then. Would I recommend stretching the way that's shown on those videos? Not really. So that begs the questions of What is "Bujinkan stretching?", etc. The real answer is that - there is no such thing as "Bujinkan stretching". These things don't come from Hatsumi Sensei and are therefore not really part of "the Bujinkan curriculum." But do we need to be flexible for Bujinkan training? Yes, of course. Both Rob and Scott Sonnon have great ways of achieving flexibility and fitness. (I think a solid case can be made for establishing Scott's influence on Rob.) Are either of those methods "Bujinkan"? No. Do they work? Sure. Should they be taught at Bujinkan seminars? Sure, as long as people understand that its not a case of "This is the way we do it in the Bujinkan," or "These are Bujinkan flexibility / motor-skill / movement exercises." Scott's company is RMAX International: http://www.rmaxinternational.com/home/mambo/index.php His main guy in Japan is Ryan Hurst: http://www.cstjapan.com/ I'm going to be hosting Ryan in Tokyo in November for a Yoga seminar which will deal with a lot of this kind of movement. Just ironing out the final details and will be making an announcement for it soon. Shawn

It's been a while since I posted, so I'll bite at this, from my own personal perspective:
Quote: Since it has been so long since Soke (and Nagato Shihan, to cite another example) has trained in sport martial arts and in the aggressive manner of the old videos, against resistance opponents, are they now training too soft themselves? I would recommend asking them (Soke / Nagato Sensei) that question in person, and then see from their response (on the mats) what you think the answer to that question is. ![]() Quote: If your answer is that because they don't 'need to' anymore, then at what point does one reach the stage when they don't 'need to'? Very subjective - depends on how much time, blood, sweat, and tears you put into your own training. Quote: Or, is Soke and the other Shihan being bad students for no longer training that way - and being bad teachers by not teaching their students that way? I would venture a guess (just a guess) that most people who would say yes to the above are males under the age of 35 who haven't yet worked all of the excess testosterone out of their system. Quote: If the current Bujinkan method is somehow "irresponsible", then who's to blame? Who is being "irresponsible"? The individual who has not put enough time, blood, sweat, and tears you put into their own training. Sensei says that he got as good as he did just because he trained 3 times as much as anyone else around. Quote: Kihon are kihon, although many have their own unique interpretation of just what those are. Nobody argues that everything starts and stops with kihon. The argument comes when people apply what they consider to be fundamental to their own view of what "responsible" training/teaching is. Yup, it's all subjective - dependent on the individual and on his/her life and priorities. Nice post! Shawn

Hi Luis,
This topic has actually been discussed a couple of times on Kutaki in the past. Have you seen this thread? It might shed some more light on your investigations. Cheers, Shawn

I'm also very curious about the source and any references that you could supply.

Unabated violence and sheer strength is what usually wins fights. I would counter that walking away and not being there is what usually wins fights (before they become fights). However, this most often involves a willingness let go of the ego and not throw in that last counter-insult, etc. Wars of words are what most fights usually spring from. If you can diffuse the war of words before it becomes a fight, then violence and strength become moot points. Don't be the last one to retort, don't feel the need to have to be right, don't need to have the last word, don't insist on having what isn't yours, let it go - suppress the ego and you win many fights.
