What is strength? Is it how much you can lift or how far you can run?

If we're talking about strength in terms of martial arts, I would say that mental strength is much more important. The mind controls the body (or so I have been told), even the strongest or fastest person in the world won't be able to capitalise on these traits if they've lost their mental focus or their will to fight.

Moral strength is just as important, if you're a person of integrity you will project this good intent onto others and avoid unnecessary conflict. You will also be able to avoid a lot of bad people by not being in the same place as them much of the time (because you're not thinking like them). Stay away from Osho, bombs and bomb recipes, hacking networks, people in gangs and people whose purpose is to cause trouble for others, false ninjutsu teachers who pose in camouflage with nunchuku. I don't pretend that I know what true ninjutsu is, but I am absolutely positive that this is the way to start knowing, the beginning of the path. Good luck.

1. To protect life

2. To understand life and death

Thank you so much for posting this Danny. I see now what you mean about going to Japan as soon as possible.

I was writing more in terms of the original thread, though I'm off on my own tangent. But, to fully experience life (even enjoy it!) - it's something I'd like to be able to do. Maybe this involves accepting all of the pleasure and pain of life with equanimity. My experience of life at the moment is that it's hard to enjoy the pleasure of life when you realise how impermanent it is. I think my life is richer for having discovered this feeling though, and carrying it with me whenever I can. It tends to sneak up on you otherwise doesn't it? I'm a very very long way away from understanding life and death... I suppose no one can give you the answers, everyone has to find them for their self.

I have been thinking a great deal on life, death & the martial arts lately. What is the purpose of martial arts when death is inevitable? I think it is more than saving your life (though this is important), it is about understanding life and death and as Soke has declared, going beyond (one step further).

Does anyone know if 'Shinobi no mono' is available on DVD? I know Soke isn't in it like Jiraiya, but I think it would be interesting to watch considering his comments on the films he has advised on in 'Secret Techniques'.

That seems like a very sensible way to train for this. I suppose you could consider it an extension of training your awareness and control of your self. Perhaps its more about being in harmony with your environment, 'blending in', as opposed to sneaking around and hiding from people. I'll hazard a guess that your breathing is a very important part of it.
