Hehe. Hint of cynicism? Good point though.

I can just say from personal experience I was fortunate to know Shawn for years and a few others from Japan that gave me sound advice about training in Japan. A lot of newer people in the Bujinkan don't have that luxury and have to trust a word someone says at the Dojo or random online forums. You pretty much have no clue your first trip to Japan about the flow of things. There is indeed politics and long established relationships with certain shihan and long time gaijin students living there and it's hard to predict what the status is with everyone. I wouldn't want to offend or step on anyone's personal or political toes when I'm there. I ran into a few things when I was there and I just stayed neutral and trained with both parties.

That being said, I would go with an open mind and just observe the various situations and make a judgement from that. I don't think years present in Japan as a student indicate a standard for who you should train with. Quality not quanity goes a long way often.

Also, I assume Shiraishi-Sensei is included as one of the four shihan? Even after 15 years in the Bujinkan I'm clueless at times.

Dale just told me of his passing this morning. Really sad. He was an inspiration and class act. He will be greatly missed for his contribution to Budo.

Just Bujinkan related? I read a few excellent Gaijin living in Japan journals if you are interested. I have my own blog the last 8 years, but it's about a Gaijin living in Canada. ;)

Really well done video. Very tragic at such a young age.
