Looks pretty interesting.

Will it be released at Barnes and Noble? If so I'll pick up a copy.

1) Circuit training with weights, calisthenics and plyometrics/ high intensity interval training. x2 days a week.

2) Telephone pole sprints x2 days a week.

If i get bored with that I switch and lift heavy/run long distances for 2-3 weeks to change it up and then go back to 1 &2.

oops, sorry, wrong thread!

Levity is appreciated!

Darren; you'd find it interesting that some (most) of the 'get off angle' options they were showing against edged weapons and various attacks was simliar, if not EXACTLY the same as what I have seen done in the Bujinkan.

I just got back from the store and was reading a new magazine called WARTAC CQC. The inside cover stated:
“WARTAC CQC is a US based company founded by by Rich Nance and David Hallford in 2004 to provide police, military, and civilians with a practical and realistic approach to firearm disarming, firearm retention, and edged weapon defense.
Our curriculum is based on simple, gross-motor tactics and commonality of technique. This streamlined approach allows officers to attain proficiency at an accelerated pace.”

Anyway there was an interview article in there with former UFC welterweight title holder Pat Miletich. Pat, who teaches unarmed fighting to LE and military, says something that I think bears repeating in reference to a first class design, 2 day SD course, etc.

“A fight is a fight, regardless of what you’re wearing or where it takes place. Of course an officers use of force continuum will ( I may be mistaken about the exact wording here) determine the officers response.”

And,

“I teach the 3 H’s in regards to control: head, hands, and hips. Control all three and you can control a person/dictate how the fight happens.”

IMNSHO I think that this mindset should be taught to new students from the beginning.

Thoughts???

I think too an issue is the persons ablility to and willingness to go through with whatever is needed to get out of the situation.

If they aren't mentally prepared to deal out violence, then all of the self defense/self protection skills in the world won't help them.

I get into this discussion with my sister-in-law a lot about firearms. What it boils down to is that no matter how much training I tell her I could give her to be able to defend herslf with a pistol, (marksmanship, immediate actions, stress firing, threat assesment, escalation of force, etc.) She maintains that she just doesn't have it in herself to look another human being in the eye and pull the trigger to end their life, even in self defense.

One would think that the instinct of self preservation would prevail over that though, right?

There's some really good advice in here. Thank you all for your input.

I think Darrens' first post really hit it on the head; Keep It Simple Sailor
(I am retired Navy, old habits die hard)

I think I remember reading on here once about dojo advice from a shihan was to take one year and do nothing but kihon happo and sanshin, or something to that effect.

Sound wisdom.

I would be interested in hearing the syllabus that Glenn wrote about earlier.

Had a thought about class design and wanted to get some perspectives.

If you were going to design a first class for a group of people with zero martial arts training, what would it look like?

What about if you had two days to teach a womens self defense class?

What about for a group with prior martial arts training, but not Bujinkan?

What about for an individual who had prior Bujinkan training, but from a few seminars 'back in the day' and currently trains through video review skype streaming, and online distance learning?

Thanks for the input.

Good topic Darren, I will do my best to give my POV.

Is good budo the same as good taijutsu?

Yes I believe so. I think of these as generic terms, not specific to the Bujinkan.

1. What do you think "good" means? Efficient? Balanced? Achieves a purpose? Looks like Soke? It works? Follows certain criteria?

Yes I believe good means effective, realistic and balanced (in all aspects of life). As far as looking like Soke, I don’t believe anyone could look like Soke. Sure the same basic movements and gross muscle movement is there, but Soke trained with Takamatsu, and learned his specific way of doing things. That plus the amount of time Soke has been teaching leads me to believe that no one has the same type and amount of influences to be able to move like him.

2. What do you think "budo" means? War? Killing? Survival? Something higher? None of the above?

To me it means all of the above and more.

3. What do you think "taijutsu" means? Technique? Kihon? Something else?

Again I think of it a just a generic term, like kung fu. A judoka, karateka, and aikidoka can have good taijutsu, although it will look different from yours and mine.

So, when you hear terms like "tasty budo", what do you thing that really means?

Something done exceptionally well.

What does it mean for someone to have "good taijutsu"?

See above.

Can any of us really judge another art's "taijutsu" and would it qualify as "budo"?

Yes.

How does this relate to your own training goals? Are you pursuing good budo, good taijutsu, or is there no difference? Do you even know?

I am striving to be a more complete and balanced person. I believe budo to be part of that path.

Does luck have anything to do with taijutsu? Do you think your training makes you more 'lucky'?

No I think training gives one more options.

Can 'luck' be a measure of the quality of one's budo?

Nope.

Hope this answers your questions. YMMV.

Me too.

Surely with all of the folks who have lived in, traveled in and visited Japan, someone knows something.

Howdy all.

I have a freind who is currently stationed in Sasebo and looking to continue training in the Bujinkan.

Does anyone have any info on the nearest dojo location?

Thank you in advance for the assistance.
