I suppose first it would depend on what style of cuisine you specialize in, and how much experience you have in the kitchen.

Currently, I'm working as an editor/translator for an ad agency here in Tokyo, and we get a lot of business from hotels & restaurants in the area. Quite a few of these restaurants advertise their foreign chefs or Japanese chefs trained overseas. It seems the more experience a chef has, the more flexibility they have with the langauge barrier.

If you are coming here to train, keep in mind that Japanese working hours are FAR, FAR different than working hours in the United States. You may find yourself sweating more in the kitchen than in the dojo, so to speak.

That being said, if you're coming here for a career, language study AND budo, please be aware that your time and finances will be divided three ways; and if you happen to develop an interest in someone of the opposite sex, or perhaps another hobby, your time and finances will again be divided.

If you are still hell-bent on coming here, there are plenty of hotels with foreign-style restaurants in Tokyo, as well as a number of Mexican, French, Italian, German, American (TGI Friday's) and Australian (Outback Steakhouse...ha, ha) restaurants in and around Roppongi. As Derek mentioned, the Tokyo American Club seems to be constantly on the lookout for a chef, as are embassies and diplomats serving at embassies.

Best of luck!

Hi Karsten,

Jeff Christian' Bujinkan Muzosa Dojo is in NYC; and I believe they have training a few nights a week in Chinatown. Great training, great group of people.

More information here:

Have fun,

Dear all,

I am posting the following message for Don Roley with regard to the current thread. Don has put together an *extremely* thorough library of information during his stay here in Japan, covering Japanese history & martial arts in general, and ninjutsu in particular. I felt that his sincere offer of access to "the Roley Collection" could prove useful to the discusion at hand. As Don is not a member at Kutaki (or to my knowledge, any other internet forum at this time), if anyone would like to get in touch with Don, please feel free to PM me. Please understand that besides training in the Bujikan here in Japan, I also work a full-time job, with full-time (Japanese) hours, which often prevents me from responding to PM's immediately.

"Hello Mr. Johnson.

My name is Don Roley, my message to you is being posted by a friend of mine.

I have documents in my possession that prove that the events as you present them could not have happened. You have either been deceived, or you are involved in deception.

There have been attempts in the past on the internet to try to tear down the lineage of the Togakure ryu by people involved in pseudo ninjutsu. They seem to think that tearing down the only school known in Japan will make themselves look better. In some cases, these frauds have presented themselves as someone just looking for information or someone uninvolved who has heard, read or run across some sort of information that makes Takamatsu and/or Hatsumi sound bad. I am currently helping several people who have left what can only be called a cult that did/ does this sort of thing. People who have set themselves up as fake ninja can hardly be expected to act honestly in all other areas of their life.

So you must understand that we have to look at you as a possible fraud.

This of course is even more the case since you are following several of the same paths taken by past attempts. You will not show your sources and you dismissed even discussing things that George Kohler brought up due to (in my eyes) a very flimsy excuse. It seems all too pat that you are willing to talk about how Takamatsu and Ueno were accused of smuggling opium and knowingly teaching things they were not qualified in, and yet not even give the names of the accusers. Aside from your refusal to let anyone see the source you quote, the fact that the month and day, but not the year is quiet suspicious.

But there is a chance that you are honest and if so I would like to help you with some documents that might help you save some time and do better on your thesis. After all, if your thesis is flawed and others such as myself can prove it, you risk professional ruin. You will have wasted all your time in school by building a thesis on flawed information. I would not want that to happen to me, so I am stepping forward to help you if I can.

At the same time, if you are a person seeking to just post things that make Takamatsu look bad, I would be foolish to help you realize the mistakes you made and let you correct them in your next story. Anything I gave you would potentially be used in future attempts if my fears are true. I know that the story you tell here can't have happened because I have documents that counter it. If I let people know the extent of my documentation then people could make their stories fit the areas we don't know the details about.

So I would have to know that you are who you say you are and are doing what you claim. If you are honest with us, that should not be hard.

But if you are not being honest with us, I would expect you to come back with some sort of excuse to avoid it. Perhaps you would say that my attitude is too confrontational or that you have certainty in your sources and do not need to deal with me due to a suspicion about me. Maybe you might even say that we will eventually get to see your sources at a time far in the future. It has been my experience that when someone says they will reveal something in the future, or after conditions are met or in private that the sources are never produced.

So if you are being dishonest and start an internet rumor, then I would expect some sort of excuse as to why you will not prove who you say you are to me or others. But if you are honest and willing to prove it, then I can greatly assist you.

I hope that I will hear from you and you will not confirm my suspicions that you are here merely to start an internet rumor."

I am sorry that you feel others on Kutaki are not paying you the proper respect you think you deserve.

Mr. Jeffery,

As someone who is a student of Chinese language and culture, as well as having an interest in politics, I am quite sure that you are aware of the current political climate between Japan and China. Being aware of that, I'm sure that to some degree, you know there have been demonstrations, sometimes violent demonstrations, in China against Japan. I'm also convinced that you are most likely aware that these demonstrators often cite Japanese military and paramilitary actions some 50 to 70 years ago as the source of their angst. Keeping that in perspective, I find your line of questioning interesting to say the least. With the internet gaining popularity in China, and English being an "international" language, I for one would not want to be responsible for publicly adding fuel, however seemingly miniscule and unimportant, to an already smoldering fire.

I can understand your curiosity about these things, but I urge you to consider the surroundings you wish your discussion to take place in, and the topic at hand.

Gassho.

I also heard, that one should do just the same in a different angle. But I experienced, that it´s not so wise to attack the hands in this way. Since, while you hurt the opponent´s hand, the Bo is still swinging around. Doing a Hane-Age to the hands will lift Bo and hands up, making it mre secure for the defender.

Well, it looks like you have everything you need right there!

Good luck to you!

"Greyarea",

Please sign your posts with your full name, failure to do so may jeopordize your reputation on this forum, as well as your posting privledges.

As far as your question about a counter for Do Uchi, what kind of response did your instructor give you when you asked him/her? If you want a clear answer from fellow forum members, a clear picture of your background is helpful.

Hi,

In Japanese, my favorite is "日本の昔話 こわい話" (Nihon no Mukashibanashi, Kowai Hanashi) by Nishimoto. I haven't read too many in English, but if you'd like a short list of Japanese titles, I'd be happy to post those; somebody may have already published English translations of the same books.

Gassho.
