Dear forum,

I got married two weeks ago and a good friend of mine gave me and my wife a nice gift.

The problem is: On that very day he told me what the kanji means, but to be honest with all the guests and the happening itself I forgot.

It is quite embarrassing and I feel ashamed asking him.

Can someone of you help to translate this: http://bujinkan-murcielago.de/wedding%20gift

I appreciate any help of yours, and thank you in advance.

The kanji looks to me to be "和", which means "Peace". It's written in calligraphy, which can make it hard to read, but it is the most likely meaning.

I agree with Blain that the kanji is most likely "wa." 'Peace' is one way to render it in English, and another way would be 'Harmony'. I personally would translate it as 'Harmony', especially given the context - that you've entered into a relationship with someone. (Haha, my co-worker's radio just started playing "When a man loves a woman...")

Kanji are hard to render into a single English word, and the most appropriate English word often depends on the context and the nuances involved. 'Peace' or 'Harmony' are probably your best options in this case.

Yes, you are right Shawn. Harmony would probably be a better rendering in this case, especially when it's used on its own.

Wa seems likely, but the same kanji can be read "nagomu". And even though the kanji's the same, nagomu means "to relax" and this calligraphy is displayed quite frequently at tea ceremonies to express this feeling of relaxed simplicity rather than the harmony meaning it usually has when combined with another kanji.

Sorry to complicate matters for you there, and congrats on your marriage.
