Do you have a favorite 'live' Katana? Where did you get it? I am thinking of getting one of the new Chen folded Katanas but curious as to others preferences.

I agree with Jeff. Anything offered by Bugei is going to be a cut above (pun intended) that sold by by more mass market retailers. A big guy like Barry could easily handle their Shobo Zukuri in the largest size sold. One of the great things about Bugei is that you can order swords in many different configurations of blade and tsuka length. I have one of their Limited Edition Golden Oriole's with a 14" tsuka and 28" blade. They have long since sold out of this model but the Samurai, Crane and Shobo are all great and under $1,000.00.

Regards,

Doesn't Bugei use the Chen blades? I first started thinking that the Paul Chen Tiger folded katana was it for me, but the dimensions were too big, so now I like the Bushido folded katana, from Shadow of Leaves.
That one has no Bo-Hi.

Yes, aside from the many-thousand dollar blades by Howard Clark, et al Bugei's swords are custom made by Hanwei/Chen. The main difference I know of is that Bugei inspects every blade and makes any corrections necessary or the simply return the blade and don't sell it. Many retailers get their production stuff from Hanwei already in boxes and just ship them straight to you.

I've heard good things about Shadow of Leaves and I think that both of folded blades you mention are a good choice. Their prices seem to be some of the best around. I'd spend the extra money to get something from Bugei but that doesn't mean that any of the folded blades from Hanwei are bad by any means. So much of it comes down to getting a sword that fits you and your body. I thought, for instance, that a 14" tsuka was way too long and kinda' overkill. After cutting with it, I now don't prefer shorter 10 or 11 inch tsuka.

Regards,
