They CAN, if assisted by a Shidoshi. (to 4th dan, ne?)

Yes.

They don't have to get the title if they don't teach. It's the teaching licence.

I think we are expected to learn more through teaching, but teaching is not a must for getting higher ranks.
To tell you the truth, I started teaching when I was an 11th dan.

Its my understanding that a shidoshi-ho is usually awarded to a 3rd/4th dan who is geographically separated from their shidoshi/shihan and is teaching a shibu/group. It is not an expected title in the progression through the ranks. Talk to your shihan. Best wishes.

... not to mention the super-secret handshake, the promotional opportunities (opening shopping mallsand the like) and the super cool ninja theme song. The true elite also get the Shinobi Squint of Death, which I've caught Steven Segal trying to mimick from time to time in his movies.

Unsuccessfully I might add.

So how many shihans do have 15th dan?

hanz0: "How many shihans have 15th dan?"

Yeah, I have no idea either. I'm guessing it could be like a couple in The U.S., a handful in Europe, a handful in Japan, and a few others scattered here and there. ~20? Or are there a lot more than this now?

"How do you get 15th dan - is there some test...? Is it the same for 11th-14th dan?"

Must be for important reasons, I'd imagine. It's all happobiken stuff up there - the stuff to know after you think you know it all (secret handshake, etc. ). 15th dan to me seems like a great international recognition - this person has and will continue to contribute to and influence the Bujinkan family.

Oh, by the way, this is one of the simplest most informative, and fun-to-read thread I've seen in a long time.

Not really. I wouldn't get too hung up on these grades. Some people have just received them through the post after x amount of time has passed since their last "grade". Amusing really.
