Bujinkan Hombu Dojo Report Theme 2005:

This years Bujinkan theme will be based on the following areas. We have learned much about the Tachi and Kumiuchi involved with Armor (Yoroi) in 2004 and we will be expanding further on that basis.

Gyokko Ryu- We have started with the Kihon focusing on striking without trying to hit a specific target but hitting to affect the persons balance and destroying their will to fight. Prepare by reviewing the Kihon for Gyokko Ryu-but do it with a different feeling. You need to create an ora of safety around yourself.

Rokushakku Bo- Sensei will release a book through Kodansha on the Bo in Feb. Everyone should make or purchase safe training weapons for this training. Rokkushaku Bo is not limited a 6 shaku bo. The six represents the elements (Roku dai) of Mikkyo- Chi, Sui, Ka, Fu, Ku and Shiki (ultra--conciousness)

Tachi- We will continue the Tachi with the Bo. If anyone is interested in buy a Tachi Mogi-to Sensei can put in an order to have them made. These would be similar to the Ninja-to and other swords in the past.

Yoroi Kumiuchi- As explained in the Daikomyosai 2004, armor is important part of fighting. One must learn to fight someone wearing armor, finding the openings as well as be able to move in armor and use its weight and characteristics for your advantage.

Hatsumi Sensei made comments regarding the Tsunami that happened in Asia recently. He said that humans have lost their ability to foresee danger. Animals have this ability and they actually escaped the Tsunami before it came. Elephants broke free from their chains in Thailand and moved to safety before the wave hit. It is important to develop this ability to perceive impending danger. This can be done by training, but is mostly controlled by luck. However, the more you train you mysteriously increase your chances of luck.

Our own local Shidoshi Tim Bathurst was on the beach in Thailand when the wave hit-He implemented the most important Ninja Art of escape and ran from the wave.

Yes, but please don't forget that Soke is teaching mainly 10th dan and above. If you (not Doug, of course ) are not so good at Kihon Happo etc. please practice them hard.

Great report Doug. Is this the Doug that was on the plane with me to DKMS?

How do we let Soke know we want a Tachi Mogi-to? I want one.

BTW - what is a Tachi Mogi-to?

Hi Greg.

It's me yes. A mogi-To is a test sword or a practice sword. Made of metal but not sharp. I will tell Sensei tomorrow but it may take more than one to justify any action yet.

I hope that Hatsumi sensei does make some more swords like this tachi mogito. But I'll have to wait until the daikomyosai to get one! Knowing my luck they will have all sold by then.

Actually, I've never heard them called mogito before. Does anyone know the kanji for this please?

Why the hang up on characters?

Double check with Ohashi san, but I beleive the characters to be 摸擬刀.

How would one go about ordering one, picking it up in Japan, then bringing it back to the UK? I know there's paperwork involved with getting swords out of Japan. Could I send it to myself via a courier (e.g. UPS)?

Does that mean that (not being a 10th dan or above) that when I come to Japan later in the year I will not be able to train with Soke?

No hang up at all. I was just curious, having never heard the term before. Thanks for your help.

Yes. It is often called Mozoutou/模造刀.

Yes, you will. (I think this is a well-known fact.)

But --
Soke teaches same things to all the guys in the dojo, but everyone learns differently.

Thank you - that's what I thought, but I thought it best to check.
I think it's just the way that I read what you'd posted and put my own spin on it.
