Hi recently my friend told me according to Japanese Immigration laws:If a person is legally married to a Japanese citizen then the Gaijin is allowed to stay in Japan with the Japanese citizen as long as the Citizen is in the country even if both were wed in the Gaijin's own country.I am asking if anyone has done this or knows about it.Thanks

Hi Dave,

What I experienced was that the marriage must still be legally registered in Japan. The Japanese spouse must get what is called a "Kouseki Touhon" (I believe I have that right) from the city hall of his/her hometown, and this document is to be used in immigration procedures to prove that the couple is legally married in Japan. (I think what happens is the kouseki touhon at the city hall of the spouse's hometown is changed to say that their new "permanent residence" is with the foreign spouse at their new address instead of in their hometown at their parents' place, which is where most Japanese people are registered.) I think you also need a sponsor of some kind to guarantee your financial status - most often the parents of the Japanese spouse.

Hope that helps - things may have changed since I went through it - that was a few years ago.

Shawn

I found the following pages.

Permission for Permanent Residence (General) (more)
IMMIGRATION CONTROL AND REFUGEE RECOGNITION ACT

*This first one is run by Osaka-fu, but you don't have to worry.

"Kouseki Touhon"

It is "Koseki Touhon" (戸籍謄本).

See Overview of the Japanese Koseki or the Family Registration System. This page is very informative. It shows a lot of things that I haven't known at all.
