Hello
A few years ago my country was engaged in civil war. Unfortunatly I took a part in that war for 2 years.Swords and knives were used during this time. Maybe this will help you to stop thinking in such manner.Knife and swords are weapons which will exist for centurys as tools of warfare.

PS:Sorry for my bad english

In UK a couple of years ago we had an MP injured and his assistant killed, I think in his offices at Westminster. By a psych patient with a 'samurai' sword.
We also had a school teacher receive horrendous injuries to her arms defending her class against a nutter with a sword.
Then we recently have the youth with alleged mental problems getting shot down by police in Humberside as he ran at them with a sword.

....Apart from the sword there does appear to be one common thread

I understand now how applicable our sword training is. Thank you for sharing all of your experiences, although some of them, unfortunately, were very sad. I have seen replicas of swords in stores in America and in Japan, but it never occured to me to use them to try to harm someone. It is good that our training is so broad.

"When will someone ever attack me with a sword?" is a question that I sometimes ask myself when training. I certainly enjoy doing sword techniques in class, but until today I thought it was kind of useless, I mean, people don't really carry around swords do they?

Even though I know there are MANY here with FAR more experience and skill than myself, I thought I would try to take a stab (no pun intended) at what I thought was the intent by the initial post.

In my opinion, there are some very important principles to be learned by training with a sword. It seems to me that many of the principles of dealing with a sword weilding attacker are also applicable to other weapons as well as unarmed (as I have learned thus far). I think the use of a sword magnifies the principles so that they are more visible. I think there isn't a whole lot of difference between someone weilding a gun and someone weilding a sword with a very fast tsuki and an extremely long blade (in principles). Just my .0002 cents worth.

Back on topic,

I've utilized sword evasion techniques in unarmed combat and it has saved me on numerous occasions.

In addition the study of the sword DOES teach you about distance. You cannot do sword if you don't understand distance! It also does a lot in teaching timing and so there are other reasons for studying sword then the idea of needing to face one.

The purpose of learning the sword (Bikenjutsu) in today’s day an age aside from maintaining tradition has to do with sharpening the senses, and focusing the mind. If you approach it from this perspective then things can make more sense.

An off the top of the head quote from "Understand? Good. Play" :

"I am teaching you to wield a sword when you have no arms!" - Soke

So, the thing here is that to me, learning to use the sword is inconsequential - you are really learning (through movements done with a sword) how to use *yourself*.

If you think on an extended FudoShinden - that you utilize all that exists around you in the execution of your intent... the sword being just one option.

Maybe Ben or Doug have some profound insights to share :)

I have always been taught that they put weapons in our hands to teach us to move our feet.
