does anyone know how the gikan ryu and the asayama ichiden ryu got mixed up? i was doing some research on the net(bad i know) and found that most sites with info on the gikan ryu say the shoden has 24 tech. but the names and tech. listed are from asayama ichiden ryu!?! the info i found was from ken harding and mats hjelms. so again i ask what's with the mix up, or misinformation?

Several years ago Shoto brought out a list of techniques that you needed to get Shodan and Nidan.

The lists were Gyokko Ryu, Koto Ryu, Shinden Fudo Ryu etc. But there was one list that contained techniques that were unknown.

I guess they put 2 and 2 togethre and came up with five, i.e that they thought that because the other schools were listed, these must be Gikan Ryu.

Coming to think of it, I find itquite annoying that Gikan Ryu, Kumogakure Ryu and Gyokushin Ryu are on the membership cards and diplomas when I dont even have a clue as to what these schools are like or if there even are any formal kata. Would feel alot better if just the other 6 schools were listed.

9 is a "magic" number in japan. gikan ryu is basically gyokko and koto done with one hand. gyokushin ryu basically think of gyokko and finishing the techniques with a roll or break fall. we all would love to learn all 9, but i think we have to be suffecient in the other 6 first.

But why are they listed there? I used to think it was because it's what we do, but then maybe they are not pointing towards us, but towards Sôke... Like "you have this rank / membership in this martial art given by this Sôke of these schools"?

And, on the new diplomas for Kyû grades thre's no list of schools anymore....
