How to tell if I have a pirated DVD

Hi,

Can anyone help? I'm trying to find out if the DVD I have recently purchased is legit. It's come in the normal white dvd case with a official looking cover, however, there is text around the hole in middle of the dvd saying 'DVD-R 8X'. If this was official, surely that wouldn't be there?

Any help would be appreciated!

DVD-R 8x is a standard format for DVD. DVD-R is a good format that will play on all DVD players. DVD+R isalso available, but may not play on players while it may play on another.

With DVD re-writers, you can copy the .pps files to your HDD and then copy them back to a rewriter and blank DVD. If the cover looks photocopied, printed on some paper from the local copy store, then it will be a copy.

But your description of the white cover DVD sounds like a copied DVD. But if the copy is good quality, then just accept that it is maybe a copy of a copy and will play on any player. But if it is a copy from video using S-video and onto DVD and of low quality, try and get a refund if it is from a shop. Trading standards will like to know of the piracy (if it is a pirate copy) and will act upon the information provided.

Umm.. thanks I think. I bought the DVD from an ebay seller, and I'm trying to see if it's legit or not. Obviously if it's not then I'll need to get in touch with Ebay, due to a bit of piracy on the part of teh seller.

Soke's DVD's are being shipped with white covers. the DVD-R writting is suspicious as I have not seen that on a professionally done DVD, however, the real indicator will be the label on the disc, if you can peel it up it is most likey a fraud as it SHOULD be screen printed.

On the case label, if there are tiny perforations at the edge, it is a fraud.

The info I have given are for Soke's DVD's, the Quest ones. I am not sure how other dvd's are being done.

Can you PM the ebay sellers name? I might be able to tell from other DVD's he has.

In general ; "official" discs are always punched in a factory.
Most of the time the reflecting side is created in just one color.
Pressed cd and dvd are a kind of silver / aluminum color.
Double layered discs can be a little more dark but overall you can see very easy if a disc is pressed or not.

There are indeed pirated pressed copy's available but most of the time they do only "big" titles wich are very likely to sell.
Those discs are very simple in artwork ; most of the time the title side of the disc only has text and no graphics.
Spell errors and dirty title sides are also signs of a pirated pressed disc.

You can tell if it's a recordable disc by it's color ; most dvd recordables have a purple data layer.
They are also available in other colors but purple is the most used.
Some pirates try to bypass this error by using rewritable discs.
With a little research you can see the difference between the pressed disc and a rewritable one.
The pressed disc is a lot lighter in color and actually "reflects".
The rewritable disc is a lot darker ( almost black ) and has ( like the normal writable discs ) a kind of text near the punch hole in the center.

The -8x title you noticed is indeed a known text on a writable disc.

Problem is that this can also be bypassed.
There are now also printable recordable discs available.

You can however feel the difference ; a pressed disc is always smooth.
A printed disc feels a bit 'paper' like due to the ink absorbing surface.

The pirated pressed discs can do screenprint and contact print but overall quality is low or they only have text and no graphics.

Hi Gary,

I Know what you mean about the DVD'd being copied, I got one off Ebay, and you can tell by the colour of the disc that it's been copied.

It really is bad that people are copying things like this, as they are really ripping off Sensei, as well as the person who is buying the item in good faith, and expecting a legimate copy.

Dave.

Yup, that's exactly right. Don't worry I'm going through the correct channels to sort this out!

If it has Jack Sparrow doing Kihon Happo or any Shihan saying "Yaaaaar, time for randori me mateies, aaaaarrr!", then it could be a pirate DVD.
