Here is one from one of the Japanese shihans:

"Don't understand? Go home!"

You just got to love it!

Hi,

On the subject of Ben Cole's book, 'Understand, Good, Play!' (UGP!)...

Sometimes you can find people selling it for quite a high price on Amazon and Ebay.

If you prefer not to go that route you may be interested to know that before UGP! Ben Cole submitted lots of quotes to an old Bujinkan newsletter from 90s entitled 'Ura and Omote'. They may be the same quotes, they may be different ones - I haven't compared them.

Archives of this newsletter can be found easily on the web and browsing through them will give you lots of quotes. A friend of mine took the trouble to sift through and compile them in to one Word document; it ends up being quite a significant number of quotations.

If I can find the document I will pm you, but please don't bank on it, it may be better to just look through 'Ura and Omote' yourself.

Maybe some quotes are fairly straight forward but, in my humble opinion, one should try to be quite careful in interpreting Soke's quotes without first knowing things like:

What is my level of understanding and the limitations of my own interpretation?
What was the level of knowledge of language, martial arts, history etc. of the interpreter?
Who was Soke talking to, what is/was their relationship, who else was present - what (if any) difference might that make?
What was the context? An open class or was it a personalised comment?
What led up to Soke saying whatever he said?
etc. etc. etc.

With all that said, the book itself is very nicely produced, it's an interesting read and I'm thankful to anyone who records and shares such things.

Good luck and I hope that's of some use...

I was looking for this "shut up and train" and wondering if Hatsumi had ever said it as i had read it somewhere else and have seen it on a t-shirt before which suggested he said it. The quote was part of the reason i was wondering if there was a section for quotes and specifically who they come from, another reason why was he comes up with some gems and they can be inspiring to some who read them like myself. Well if any one can help me out it would be appreciated.
