I've been talking to some Bujinkan members who are working at 英会話, English conversation schools, and it seems that the employers have been violating the labour standards code and misinforming their employees of their duties and rights.

Please see this English translation of the code - http://www.jil.go.jp/english/laborinf ... ry/documents/llj_law1.pdf

For plain English answers about your questions on labour and employment contracts in Japan, see The Foreign Worker's Handbook on the General Union website.

Thanks for the info, Liz, those sites are very helpful. Knowledge is the best weapon against unlawful labour practice. Some employers may count on their employees' inability to understand Japanese, or Japanese Labour Laws in order to raise the profit margin.
Good heads up,
cheers
