In this week's Asahi News, a story about foreign tourism and the industry's lack of awareness of the foreign traveler's must-see list -

Foreign travelers prefer sushi to temple circuit

They used to come here looking for the "real Japan," to find the historical sites and samurai traditions depicted in movies like "Shogun."

But nowadays, sushi, anime and onsen (hot springs) are the big attractions for foreign visitors to Japan, according to a survey by TripAdvisor KK, which runs a free travel website.

Its survey of foreign tourists on Japan's favorite tourist attractions found that destinations like the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo's Chuo Ward and Pokemon Center Tokyo in Minato Ward ranked higher than Kinkakuji temple in Kyoto.

And Oedo Onsen Monogatari, a huge spa facility in Koto Ward, Tokyo, outranked Kyoto's famed Kiyomizudera temple.

The results shocked industry specialists. "(The results) created waves that have affected our tourism strategy," one said.
