I think the naked women was a little over the top. If a naked woman came up to me on the street then I would be more suspicious.

I know some of those Shihan even the ones that are not in the Bujinkan anymore. Some still teach in Chiba and the surrounding areas.

I agree I would have deleted the post if I was in charge of this forum. It's like a link to soft ninja fantasy porn.

Not an appropriate link for some sites. But, it's not offensive there's worse in the open in Japan.

I went to the University of Queensland Judo Club's 55th anniversary dinner last Saturday. Lot of old boys from the sixties and seventies there.

They had a powerpoint slideshow of photos from the past including several of Arthur Tansley. I remembered the name and was talking to some of the old guys who remember him. He was friends with Doron and Danny Waxman I believe and still living in Tokyo somewhere but apparently not doing so well with old age catching up to him.

Anyway it reminded me to look up his photos again.

Some good stuff from the old days ... and yes some boobs but the old Bujinkan boobs seemed to be prevalent back then - the old movie done for the Togakushi museum (with old shihan doing backflips) and some of sensei's old books.

The picture I most like was the shihan in kamae in sensei's old house. Who would have thought how big it all become.

It is more for the time when she is cornered or needs to direct your attention from something else...
I understand that nakedness was one of the kunoichi. Kind of "mitsu-something" . You look at the naked breasts and the sharp knife is all of a sudden not in your full focus... look into Sanmyaku for explanation of the "ku no ichi".... (i do not feel appriopriate for me to lecture here..) The theme was even shown in some Embu.

Americans tend to thing nudity is somehow porn, it in itself is not. That comes from out attitudes toward it and our societies willingness to put sick offensive attitudes on nudity. Those Kunoichi were doing what was needed to survive and in the end that is what matters, survival. It is only the "forbidden" aura of nudity that makes it offensive.

As the most frequent female poster on Kutaki and a Japanophile with seven years of experience living in this culture, I have a certain kind of insight into Japanese attitudes towards the human body.

First, Gregory Smits has a detailed explanation about Tokugawa and Meiji Period attitudes and laws regarding propriety and public behaviour. Basically, the Shogunate passed edicts to prohibit behaviour that they didn't want the foreign visitors to see. This included public nudity which was not as marked as sexualized in Japanese culture of the time. In fact, elaborate clothing was a marker of wealth and had great sensual appeal, Smits argues. Japanese attitudes about the human body today, I believe, are not westernized, but "covered up", pun intended.

Photographers did a project, Body Image in Japan and the United States. One of the passages succinctly describes the attitude towards the human body that I've observed in my time here. This was something I couldn't put my finger on, but here it is so clearly stated:

Quote:
Many Japanese people we spoke to, when talking about bodies, began by saying something about lack of boundaries, or lack of edges. According to Yoshioka, “‘karada,’ (体) the traditional Japanese word for ‘body’ includes the part kara, which means ‘shape’ or ‘empty.’ Karada can be described as ‘empty flow.’” Yoshioka says that this term describes a body that is a form or husk, which the wind can literally pass through, while the Western concept is of a substantial, opaque, boundaried body. According to him, karada is an intimate, personal term for the body, too close to measure.

Fukuzawa Junko says: “I think that bodies have boundaries in the U.S., but they don’t have them in Japan.”

The lack of boundaries initially was a shock - going to the lingerie shop and being seriously handled as part of the bra fitting, indulging in akasrui, a head-to-toe body exfoliation treatment, and women in the bath touching each other in ways that would be considered taboo in North American culture.

So, really, it's more interesting than "Bujinkan boobs", as Duncan wrote earlier.

Were those really "Bujinkan boobs", or was she a model or a partner of a member? Maybe someone who knows can respond.

Dunno about those pictures, but seem to recall that in one of the old books a adult entertainment professional was hired for the "flashing"....

No one is arguing about the dedication they were putting into accomplishing their task. Most of who has had any female companionship are familiar with women's power of persuasian. The point is using their sexuality isn't only about showing boobs.

And if you are fighting woman with a sword and she opens her shirt while she is fighting is only going to distract the weakest of opponents.

The images are simply showing a woman posing with her boobs showing. That is why it's over the top. One image shows application the rest is just the photographers own perversion.

If Japanese women are so open with displaying full nudity then why are all the public lingerie advertisements in Japan show only Caucasian women. Not to mention Japanese porn pixel the private parts in the movies.

I can't seem to view the photos, & I'm not really interested in them, to tell the truth.
In 1966, I was in Vietnam, as a combat infantryman. I was wounded in November, 1966, and was sent to Camp Drake, Japan, where I remained for months, until there was no longer anything the docs could do for me there. I went back to the States then, but before that, some of us had a great time in Japan.
In the course of that, we often went "downtown," & in so doing, hit a coffee shop in Ikebukuro, where the enjoyed having anyone come who spoke foreign languages, but certainly, English. I think it was there that we met a guy who was Australian, and studying judo @ Kodokan. He showed us around, a bit. I think he may have taken us to the Foreign Correspondents Club (not sure which prefecture). Shinjuku?
I think he invited us to come & observe some of the judo work @ Kodokan. I've forgotten his name, but this would again be late 1966-1967. We met some great people studying judo, or other areas of interest, in Japan, in those days.
Does anyone have photos of THAT era? Or, perhaps remember that guy? And, his name? I had a run in w/a vicious washing machine that destroyed most of the addresses in my address book of that era.
I loved Japan. Was in South Korea before I volunteered for combat in Vietnam.
Been a long time ago, but the Japanese were wonderful people.
I am not sure what the issues are in this discussion about Arthur Tansley's old photos. I just wish I could remember the name of the club. I think this guy lived in (sp) Shinanomachi?
