For a Space Marine at a Sci-Fi Convention, it looks pretty cool and would probably get him laid. Doing Bujinkan..... perhaps he should stick to Sci-fi conventions.

At least he based it off of 40k space marines and not StarCraft.. (yes Im a geek)

but yeah.. not very effective for martial arts... I think thats why they carry big guns ;)

Gentlemen,

I would like to start by answering the question of this thread authoritively, which I can do since i am the creator of this suit and video.

WHY? well, it should come as no surprise that some of the schools within the Bujinkan, are armoured, battlefield systems. not that this means it was all that was taught in these schools, but a component of kukishinden, koto , also perhaps even the "rumour" of kumogakure using iron sleeve
bars for defence just to name a few.

i have studied in the bujinkan for 11 years, and as i believe is appropriate to my level, consider myself a novice,
at Nidan, despite my limited duration ofsolid study so far, i have been very lucky to have studied with several quality recognized intructors here in new zealand.

As part of being thorough, attending to the study of the juhakkei, and the kihon of the schools i have been taught,
I have spent thelast two years training in full armour to increase my taijutsu ability, it is my understanding thet one of the things Soke has mentioned for 2010 is utsuwa, I am mererly trying to improve my skills while wearing nearly40 kg of metal.

however, the thread so far has things i wouldlike to acknowledge:

1) thanks for the compliments, looking cool is something i
see as being part of budo taijutsu as "knight taijutsu"
( quote from Sensei Ben Jones book understand..good..play

2) to clarify,I am aware that this is soapbox, and opinion
is the main objective in having such a unfettered topic
so im not taking anything personally, but as it is
discussed in the martial law thread , careful professinality must be exercised alongside freedom of speech.
I am not a gamer, nor do i own a tv or games console, nor ever have. i am a serious real world person, doing his best to serve Humanity and become more benevolent, also since I am married and have children, implications of sexual
conduct at conventions ofany type could be slanderous at the least.

3) however, since I am sure both of you are senior practitioners if you would like to offer comment on suki,
then be my guests, an opportunity to improve will always be greeted with grace from a good deshi. this video was to show
my basic understanding ofthe sanshin, as taught to me isshi soden,

I think the main point i wouldlike to make is that this experience has been a big opportunity for me to learn, that the internet as Soke has said is like a net, it has somebig holes in it, and things get away through them!
I willbe ever more careful in future with how I represent
my efforts within the community of the bujinkan, i follow the guidlines for participation rigorously, and i will not be seen to be a troublemaker forthe Art.

feel free to ask me any questions, or PM me to verify
anything, i am always happy to comply privately.

Shikin haramitsu

Gambatte!

Mat.

Mat - cool costume and I'm sure it is fun to play with Bujinkan taijutsu in it. I've done plenty of BJK kata in my European armor just to experience the difference and "make sense" of some of the yoroi concepts.

But you won't find any public video of me doing it and I think that's where the sticking point comes to many people.

Since most people don't know you personally, all they see is a guy in a fantasy/sci-fi costume doing what he labels Bujinkan training. Again, I'm not judging, I get what you were doing. But, you have to consider the viewpoint of others, particularly when you use the Bujinkan name and publicly post it on YouTube. Those watching won't understand the context or why you are doing it. They only see a LARPer in a sci fi costume pretending to be a serious martial artist (at least that's how THEY would see it, as I am sure you are a very serious budoka). You have to agree the net is full of people who do this and I'm sure you've scratched your head a time or two at some of the more silly examples out there.

The question always becomes, "why would anybody publicly post this?"

This is where public posting of videos is a dangerous thing. What you do publicly under the Bujinkan banner reflects on all of us. Now, people should not care what other people think of us or the Bujinkan. But, people do and it might help to be sensitive to it when you are posting videos of your training "experiments" on such a globally public site like Youtube.

That's just my opinion and I mean no offense or judge you in any way in how you wish to train. I'm just offering my advice for your consideration.

If you were doing it out of just silly fun, then expressing that in the title and/or description right off would help some people let go of their over-serious attitude about martial arts and martial artists - oh, but THAT'S a whole 'nuther topic...

Enjoy your training!

Thanks for the reply Darren,

I fully appreciate your perspective on this matter, and as such I have removed the tag Bujinkan from any material on youtube.

I am guilty of the error of assumed knowledge in this case,
whilst it is true that anyone in the bujinkan could potentially recognize
and understand, there are many who will not, or who will
misconstrue it all the same.

Like I said before, i take my commitment to this art seriously
and dont want to reflect anything negative on our image, I see my duty here in new zealand to focus more on spreading soke's hard work to dispell the media hyped ninja with a more accurate representation with the ninja as an enlightened specialist who aids society through patience and skill.

hence my blending of the two aspects. the noble astartes are an archetype that is understood by todays dissaffected youth.
strangely in their purity of purpose they are closer to the actual ninpo paragons i have known in life.

Also, the only reason i labelled it as bujinkan in the first place was out of respect, to attribute the art shown to its proper source, beacause without the chain of isshi shoden back through Soke to Takamatsu Soke we in the west may never have had the opportunity to see the truth of this secret art.

I believe that youtube is a useful as well as harmful tool, and like any tool the use or harm is the sole responsibility of the user. i will take he small risk involved on the basis that it may inspire even one more person to keep going, to endure, to acheive.

also, I formally request that in the future, if any shihan, shidoshi,or even soke has anything to say in regard to my conduct then I will of course follow the guidance of those who came before, Iknow that I need tempering and direction
andit is only through listening to my peers and teachers that this can be acheived.

thank you once again for your time

Mat.

On a lighter note, did you make that yourself? What are the plates made from? What lessons did you learn from moving in such armor? It would seem that it is unnecessarily bulky compared to the amount of protection, especially in the shoulders. Of course, it is based on fantasy which is exaggerated to begin with...
