74-year old American tourist detained for 10 days by Japanese police for carrying a pocket knife. Japanese defense lawyer says this is "not unusual." Son is finally allowed to see him after 4 days, at which point police ask them to converse in Japanese because they don't have a translator to interpret what they're saying. Bizarre is a gross understatement. You resident gaijin be careful out there!

Nothing shocks me about Japan anymore...

Between Waseda university rape clubs and signs telling people it's wrong to fondle high school girls on trains, seriously do they need a sign? It would be better if the government here would get a clue instead.

An acquaintance of mine has been stopped twice now by the police who wanted to dig through his belongings to look for a knife. This is illegal by the way. They aren't allowed to do that. Know your rights.. but then again, this is japan, everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others.

OKOHAMA (Kyodo) A 15-year-old girl who was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stabbing a girl seated next to her during class at a private high school for girls in Yokohama is believed to have acted suddenly and without provocation, police said Wednesday.

The victim, also a 15-year-old first-year student at Seishin Girls Senior High School, remains in critical condition in a hospital. She suffered deep stab wounds to her side by what appeared to be a fruit knife with a 12-cm blade that sliced through her liver and reached her kidney, the police said.

They might be checking the wrong people I think.

You're right.

I was working at a Japanese software company in 1998, and at one of our company parties a former co-worker of mine got into an argument with one of the other bar customers, followed him out onto the street, and stabbed him to death. He's still in jail for manslaughter (I hope!).

This Guy (Debito.Org) has some great information on his site for foreigners who want to make sure they're aware of the law and what their rights are in Japan.

Very interesting articles Shawn, thank you. It just goes to show again that one must seek out the facts for themselves before making a decision. Don't presume that it will be what you've grown up with or that you have "rights".

I once gave Nagato and Noguchi Sensei a Pocket knife as a give. Another friend gave them a version of a vicious hooked fighting knife that could be hidden along a belt. We did not know we were making them criminals!

We just had a meeting about this at school.

The girl was said to be bright and happy in Jr. High, but she changed soon after entering high school she became darker.

The move from Jr.high to high school here is more like going from high school to college in the states.

As far as i know, Japan is really strict when talking about foreign people who will come to their place. Most especially when your bringing a throwing knife. They will ivestigate you why you bring that knife.

If you wish to carry "weapons" with you, make certain that they are objects that no one sees as a weapon, but also know how to use it effectively. That's why I carry my cane.
