The Three Rules of Walking
"Human beings are highly adaptive species, but when it comes to walking many of us demonstrate a level of skill that can only be called emerging. The more highly evolved walkers among us skate easily through crowds by following three ground rules: they watch the feet of the people around them to predict direction (the head and torso are lagging indicators), they change direction often to slip behind people rather than rushing to cut them off, and they never get tripped up by apologizing. For an advanced lesson in navigating crowded spaces, check out: Central Station Antwerp (set to the Sound of Music)." [Wired, July 2010]

I've always been interested in watching how people walk.
You can tell a lot about someone's life by paying attention to their stride.

Evidently so can psychopaths!
Extract: "In the study, male student participants examined video tapes of twelve individuals walking from behind and rated the ease at which each could be mugged. The men also completed the Self-Report Psychopathy Scale: Version III (Paulhus, Hemphill, & Hare, in press) which measures interpersonal and affective traits associated with psychopathy as well as intra-personal instability and antisocial traits. Finally, they were asked to provide verbal rational for their ratings. Overall results confirmed a strong positive correlation between psychopathy scores and accuracy of victim identification. This means that individuals that score higher for psycopathy are better at selecting victims. Statistically significant results for psychopathy traits including interpersonal manipulation, callous affect and antisocial bevavior were found." [But I guess you already know this given your profession]

While I see no reason to question the correlation of traits, I'd be cautious about "assigning meaning" to them.
Quote: “Then there are sheepdogs,” he went on, “and I’m a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.” Or, as a sign in one California law enforcement agency put it, “We intimidate those who intimidate others.”

I also find it interesting to observe people and not only as they walk. It is possible to tell a lot about their personality. One thing that tells a lot is how balanced they maintain themselves as they walk.

A further experiment tested clinically diagnosed violent psychopaths held in jail or psych wards.
> 90% picked the traumatized 'walker' by the time they reached the end of a small corridor. The control group did not yield a statistically significant response.

I read the Wired article. It was interesting, but I would warn against keeping your head down at all times, and avoiding eye contact. That makes you look like a good victim.

I also would take exception to "keeping the eyes down and not making eye contact". It is much better, IMO, to keep your head up, walk without showing fear, look at everything around you, but not retain focus on any one thing or person. You do not want to be sending a message of "challenge" only of very sharp awareness. It is those who look like they can be surprised that are most likely to be chosen victim.
