Thanks for the heads up on that book!

Whoever has it already,-- do you know whether it is handwritten or typed text?

The main problem with translation of old-style Japanese into English is in knowing which period and region the piece came from, and then knowing the common usage of terms from that period (or, put differently, to know when slang is being used).

I studied koten in college (loved it) and this might give me a chance to jump back into it. I would be happy to work with people on a NOT FOR SALE (i.e. open-sourced) version if we have some folks in Japan who can do some footwork. There are plenty of Japanese outside, but the silverbacks in country would have a better understanding of the context, I suspect.

Hi Karsten,

I have not been in contact with him in awhile but I could get a hold of him in necessary. We have mutual friends at Kodansha and the same training mates with Takenouchi Ryu and Kiraku Ryu. Should I ask him about the translations?

BTW, I found out today that all of Fujita Seiko's work will be reprinted by the end of the year. Also there is an effort being made to reprint the works of Heischichiro Okuse. The work of those two did a lot to bring an interest in the history of ninjutsu in the 1940's and 50's. I personally would like to see Yumio Nawa's work as well.

Aloha Jason,

Funny you should write, it was my mentioning to my friend that I recieved Fujita's book Ninjutsu Hiroku yesterday from you guys that brought that up.
I am not sure which titles were being talked about. I had the impression it was some of the major ones since even those are not that easy to get, but I will have to ask. I know of 8 titles, how many do you know of by him?

Hi Chris,
it would be wonderful if they reprint the Fujita and Okuse books. Reprinting Nawas books almost sounds too good to be true. I have some and wanted to get the others as well. Apparently many furuhonya know what they are worth so getting a new copy could be much cheaper.
If you have the time I would very much appreciate any information that you could get on the translation projects by Serge Mol.

Thank you very much for your help !
Karsten

Hi

Like I said it has been two years since I heard that from Serge Mol and I have not heard anything since. So don't get your hopes up too much. I hope it does happen though. Then again it may spawn a whole new batch of pretenders.

Hi all,

I guess, reprinting works by Seiko, Nawa and Okuse does not necessarily mean they will be translated in languages other than japanese, does it?

Hello,

The "Shôninki" is already published in French, and soon in English :

http://www.amazon.fr/Sh%C3%B4ninki-La ... TF8&qid=1282333446&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Shoninki-Secret ... TF8&qid=1282333517&sr=1-1

According to the forum Kwoon, there's too a french translation of the whole "Bansenshukai" almost finished, from the same author :

http://www.kwoon.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20260

Very good news, isn't it ?
