Good morning Forum,

Does somebody know what other places offer Shugen pilgrimages throuough Japan, especially in the spring timeframe (March, April). The place does not matter.

I found one offered by the Ideha museum in Yamagata, unfortunately this is only done in September. Also I wonder if that is the only place in Japan where one can join a pilgrimage?
For people interested, see this link (pdf file)

Moderators, if this topic is in the wrong place, feel free to move.

Thanks,
Ramon

This sounds interesting, however I am ignorant on the subject. What is this pilgrimage you speak of? I am living in Kyoto for the next four months, and would be interested in doing something like this, even though i don`t knhow waht it is, the word pilgrimage pricked my interest.
any info would be appreciated.

akwatic,

Im not sure if you are familiar with Shugendo and Yamabushi (mountain ascetics). If not you will surely find alot on the net about this.
Check the link I posted in my first message, you can get more information about what will be done during these 3 days.

I am currently still in Japan and a week ago I joined a "Hiwatari" also organised by Yamabushis. Basically its a quite long ceremony performed by Yamabushis where they do a big fire and when only the glowing ashes ae left the Yamabushis and the watching people can walk through the ashes. I did it too..... a very interesting experience.

If you stay in Kyoto you should find alot of those events. Just ask around the locals, and avoid the tourist areas, you wont get much out of these places!!
