Hi,

I'm about to make myself a training Yari and was wondering were they traditionally made to a certain size or did it depend on the user ?

For my first one I'm going to use an old Bo and just shape the end into a 'blade' but for future attempts I would like to make a 'proper' sized one.

Thanks
Stuart

The best length for Bujinkan training would be 270 cm. as far as I know.

BTW: I think the yari in the Booj are from Kukishinden, aren't they?
Are there yet other schools in the Booj which got yarigata?

I'm quite sure there was no single length for yari. What are you basing this on?

Kuden from my own teacher. He said that the best length to train yari in Bujinkan would be 270cm...
That's why I wrote "as far as I know" by the way.

I know there is no single length to yari. It can have virtually any size, depending the school as far as I know.

From my point of view (Bujinkan pov ) there are no set hard and fast rules to weapons of any type in reguard to size. While there are certain schools and maybe even certain warlords of the day that equipped thier students/soldiers with weapons of a certain size and style this was because they made the weapon to suit thier taijutsu , where as we change our taijutsu to suit the weapon we are holding. In general though weapons were made to suit the users size exactly like armour would have been.I can't see Nagato sensei wearing armour made for Seno sensei or visa versa :)) As for yari's I have seen them in Japan from Jo length to almost 6 meters (20 feet) in length and blade lengths from 100mm (4 inch) to 1 meter (around 3 foot 3 inches). If your Taijutsu and feeling is correct you should be able to use a tanto like a yari and a yari like a tanto. So just another 50 years or so and I will be able to put into practice what I preach ;)

Thanks for the replies guys. So I s'pose shaping the end of a bo is ok after all. The one I was training with on the weekend was about that length and felt pretty good so I'll go with that.

I think just shaping the end of a bo will make the yari too short. I usually make mine at least 7ft long (six foot stick with a one foot blade) which I think is the shortest you want it.

In soke's book "Sohjutsu" he gives a copy of the Saburi Ryu Scroll in which the following dimensions are given for three types of yari

Long Yari - 2-ken 1-shaku (approx. 3.94m)
Medium Yari - 1-jo 1-shaku (approx 3.33m)
Short Yari (with hook) 8-Shaku 5-sun- (approx 2.576m)
