All,

Hatsumi Soke received a culture award from the Japanese Imperial Household on November 3rd, in recognition of his "many years of contribution to art culture" and his instruction, which is "deeply related to international cooperation and positive contributions to society" and which play a great role in realizing the dreams of the future.

This is the second cultural award that Soke has received from the Imperial Household - a wonderful honour.

Best wishes,

Shawn

Who would have believed, years ago, that a teacher of Ninjutsu could bring so many diverse people together from all over the world and share with them all such a unique and unexpected opportunity to learn more about the martial arts, life and themselves than anyone could have dreamed possible?

As divisive as the Bujinkan community can be in the particulars from time to time, the agreement is clear when it comes to each of us pursuing Hatsumi Soke's teachings and budo as faithfully and truthfully as we know how, and the enjoyment, joy even, that we each feel in our training.

Cheers to Hatsumi Soke!

I believe I heard that He is the only Martial Artist to receive such an award.

The following post from Ben Jones, long-time translator / interpreter for Hatsumi Sensei, clarifies some important points with regard to this award:

"It's not from 宮内庁 (the Imperial Household Agency), but from "patent higashikuninomiyakinenkai" 東久邇宮記念会 (qv https://ja.wikipedia.org/...) which is a private organization founded in 1963 by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morihiro_Higashikuni (whose mother was the child of the Meiji emperor through a court lady) to commemorate the 'princely' title his father and father's father had enjoyed before they became commoners. The group is not affiliated to the Imperial Household in any way, and is mainly concerned with issuing its own awards for 'inventors' (an example quoted on the website is 'someone who invents a tastier kind of miso soup') and those thought to have contributed to culture (both types can be nominated by others, or nominate themselves: the group does not actively research suitable recipients). Apparently the 'cultural' awards are particularly popular with the directors of small & medium enterprises. It is currently run by a 'patent administrator' (特許管理士 - not an official title).

N.B. None of this is intended to detract from the fact that Soke has received this award - evidently it is great that someone considers his activities significant enough to nominate him for it - but at the same time, it's good to get the facts right, and put it in perspective."

A tastier kind of budo, perhaps?

Cheers all the same!
